August NFP: The Last Major Data Point Before the Most Important FOMC Decision of 2026.
By Advantage Gold | September 2026
August nonfarm payrolls drop at 8:30am ET today — the last major employment data point before the September 15-16 FOMC meeting, now 11 days away.
The setup going into this release may be the most consequential of any data release in 2026. Gold just posted its best month since September 1999. Silver rose 19% in August. September hike odds are near 50% following Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech and a hotter-than-expected PCE print. The Treasury’s TGA-funded expanded bond buyback program starts September 9 — six days before the FOMC decision.
Today’s NFP reading will either firm or soften the September hike probability in the final stretch before the most anticipated Fed decision of the year.
THE COMPLETE SETUP
Going into today’s NFP, here is the complete picture:
September hike odds: near 50% — the most uncertain the market has been about any Fed decision since the current tightening cycle began.
The Fed is more divided than it has been in two decades. Three officials dissented at last month’s meeting in favor of an immediate hike and have repeatedly reiterated that call. Several holdouts expressed sympathy in the FOMC minutes. Warsh has provided greater transparency at Jackson Hole but has not resolved the September question.
The economic data tells a complex story. July NFP contracted by -23,000 — the first monthly job loss in years. Retail sales fell 0.6%. Consumer sentiment dropped 8%. But PCE came in hotter than expected, and Warsh acknowledged persistent above-target inflation. The stagflationary picture has been deepening.
Gold is above $4,400. Silver is above $66. Both metals just completed their best monthly performance since 1999. The structural case — fiscal deterioration, de-dollarization, central bank accumulation, TGA-funded financial repression — is intact and building.
THE TWO SCENARIOS
Strong August payrolls — in line with or above recent readings:
The three dissenters’ argument is reinforced. The labor market can absorb additional tightening. September hike probability moves toward 60% or higher. Near-term pressure on paper gold as rate expectations firm.
But the longer-term picture for gold does not change. Rate hikes into persistent supply-driven inflation and a cracking consumer deepens the stagflationary setup. The 1970s parallel — supply-driven inflation the Fed could not tame with demand-side tools — intensifies. And stagflation has historically been among gold’s most constructive long-term environments.
Weak August payrolls — a second consecutive month of contraction or significant miss:
The labor market deterioration is confirmed. The three dissenters’ case is materially weakened. September hike probability falls back toward 33% or below. Dollar softens. Rate suppression on gold eases. Gold may extend August’s historic momentum toward institutional year-end targets.
The asymmetry remains: strong payrolls add incremental pressure that is already partially priced. Weak payrolls force a rapid unwind of tightening consensus positioning — the kind of move that has historically produced disproportionately large gold gains.
WHAT DOES NOT CHANGE AT 8:30AM
Whatever the payrolls number shows, a set of structural realities remain unchanged when the data is released.
The national debt is still $40 trillion. The dollar’s reserve share is still sliding toward 54%. Global debt is still at a record $353 trillion. Gold is still the world’s top reserve asset. The Treasury’s $1 trillion TGA drawdown still starts September 9. Central banks are still in their 17th consecutive year of net gold purchases.
August 2026 still happened. The structural case that produced the best monthly precious metals performance since 1999 does not reverse with one jobs number.
Today’s NFP sets the tone for September 16. The structural foundation beneath gold and silver has already been built by everything that came before it.

August NFP and gold: the bottom line
Whatever the August NFP prints, the Fed’s choice is between defending the dollar and defending the labor market, and gold tends to benefit from either path over a full cycle. Payroll data is published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and revised for months afterward, which is one more reason not to build a retirement strategy on a single print.
