In brief: The gold and silver pullback has gold 22% and silver 46% below their highs. The reasons to own them have not changed; the price has. What that means for buyers.
Gold Down 22%. Silver Down 46%. Same Case. Bigger Discount.
By Advantage Gold | September 2026
Gold is 22% below its January 29, 2026 all-time high of $5,597. Silver at $66.22 is 46% below its January peak of $121.62.
Rate expectations drove both moves. August NFP printed 162,000 against a 56,000 forecast. Hike odds jumped to 85.5%. The Fed delivered a 25 basis point hike on September 16. Paper market traders sold because higher rates raise the cost of holding non-yielding assets.
The national debt is still $40 trillion. Interest payments consume 18.5% of all federal revenue, surpassing the 18.4% record set in 1991 when the 30-year Treasury yield was 8%. Today that yield sits near 5%. China added 20 tonnes of gold in August, its largest monthly purchase since October 2023, extending a 22-month buying streak. Silver’s sixth consecutive annual structural deficit is widening. Global stockpiles have been depleted by 762 million troy ounces since 2021.
JPMorgan’s gold target is $6,000. Goldman Sachs holds at $4,900. Wells Fargo projects $6,100 to $6,300. Every one of those targets was published after the correction began.
In Q2 2013, the Federal Reserve signaled it would taper quantitative easing. Gold fell sharply. From those lows, gold gained approximately 316% to its January 2026 all-time high of $5,597. The structural backdrop today is more extreme. The debt in 2013 was $17 trillion. The US held AAA ratings from all three agencies. Central banks were buying at a fraction of their current pace.
Same case. Bigger discount.

What a silver and gold pullback means if you have not bought yet
A gold and silver pullback of this size inside a bull market is a pricing event, not a verdict on the metals. The debt, deficit and central-bank demand that drove the highs are all still rising, which you can verify in the World Gold Council’s quarterly demand reports. Savers who found the top uncomfortable now have the same case at a discount. If you want to add metal inside a retirement account, see how a Gold IRA works and which coins and bars qualify.
There is also a practical side to a discount like this. Silver in particular is a small market, so the same dollars buy far more ounces today than they did at the January high, and premiums on common bullion products have come down with the price. For a retirement saver that changes the math on a first purchase: a position sized at 5% to 10% of a portfolio now costs meaningfully less to establish. The silver and gold you hold in an IRA are priced at spot plus a dealer premium, so a lower spot price and a lower premium compound in your favor.
None of that is a reason to rush, but it is a reason to run the numbers now rather than after the next move higher, and to ask a specialist which products carry the lowest premium at today’s levels.
