Silver Miners Hold Record $4.8 Billion in Cash. The Metal Is 46% Below Its High.
By Advantage Gold | September 2026
The top 10 silver mining companies hold a record $4.8 billion in net cash as of September 8, 2026, per Bloomberg data analyzed by Tavi Costa of Azuria Capital and flagged by the KobeissiLetter. During the 2011 silver bull market, the same group held $1.5 billion. From 2015 through 2023, net cash was often negative, reaching as low as approximately -$1 billion.
Silver at $66.22 sits 46% below its January 2026 all-time high of $121.62.
Silver is heading for its sixth consecutive annual structural deficit. Global stockpiles have been depleted by 762 million troy ounces since 2021, nearly equal to a full year of global mine production. Approximately 70-75% of annual silver supply comes as a byproduct of mining lead, zinc, copper, and gold. Supply cannot be scaled up on demand. The constraint is geological, and it has not eased during the price correction.
Each solar panel requires approximately 20 grams of silver. Electric vehicle production is growing globally, with silver embedded in battery management systems, sensors, and charging infrastructure. AI data center construction is accelerating. 5G infrastructure deployment continues at scale. Each of these demand streams pulls more silver from a shrinking pool.
JPMorgan’s base case for silver is $81 per ounce. Goldman Sachs projects $85 to $100. The LBMA consensus from 26 analysts is $79.57. Every target was set after the correction. None sits below current spot.
Companies with $4.8 billion in cash can invest in future production, acquire distressed assets, or return capital to shareholders. The silver companies have never been in stronger financial shape. The price has rarely been this far below what the physical market supports.

What record cash at the silver miners signals
When silver miners carry record cash into a 46% drawdown, they are telling you the business is profitable at these prices and they are not forced sellers. That is the opposite of what happened at the 2015 lows. Supply still lags demand, as the Silver Institute has documented for several consecutive years. For a saver, physical silver offers the same exposure without company-specific risk, and IRA-eligible silver can sit inside a precious metals IRA alongside gold.
Cash on a miner’s balance sheet also changes how the next leg of the cycle plays out. Companies that are not forced to sell forward production at low prices keep more of the upside when silver recovers, and they can fund new supply only when the price justifies it, which tends to keep the market tight. For an individual investor the simplest way to participate is not the equity but the metal itself: physical silver carries no management risk, no hedging book and no dilution, and it can sit inside a precious metals IRA with the same tax treatment as the rest of your retirement savings.
If you want exposure to the sector’s recovery without picking the right mining stock, that is the position most of our clients choose. Call (888) 501-9001 and a specialist can show you which silver coins and bars qualify for an IRA and what they cost today.
