In brief: The Fed hiked and gold rose because the debt drives gold now. Here is the relationship between federal debt and the gold price since 1971, and why it matters for savers.

The Fed Doesn’t Drive Gold. The Debt Does.

By Advantage Gold | September 2026

The Federal Reserve hiked 25 basis points on September 16. Gold trades at $4,353 this morning.

After each of the last four Fed rate hiking cycles ended, gold produced the following 12-month returns: 2000 cycle end, +24%. 2006 cycle end, +30%. 2018 cycle end, +19%. 2023 cycle end, +38%. The average was approximately 28%. Past performance is not indicative of future results, and each cycle carries its own characteristics.

Rate hiking cycles create temporary pressure on gold by raising the cost of holding a non-yielding asset and pushing the dollar higher. When that pressure fades, the forces that were building underneath show up in the price. Those forces drove gold from $279 in 2000 to $5,597 in January 2026, across four administrations, multiple recessions, and two separate Fed tightening cycles.

The US national debt stands at $40 trillion. Interest payments consume 18.5% of all federal revenue, a new all-time record. The dollar’s reserve share sits at approximately 54% of global foreign currency reserves, down from 71% in 2000. China has purchased gold for 22 consecutive months. Gold holds a larger share of global central bank reserves than US Treasuries for the first time since 1971.

Gold at $4,353 sits 22% below its January all-time high. JPMorgan targets $6,000 to $6,300. Goldman Sachs holds at $4,900. The debt that drove gold’s 1,460% gain since 2000 keeps growing.

If the debt drives gold, here is what to watch instead of the Fed

Once you accept that the debt drives gold, the news you need changes: Treasury auctions, interest costs and foreign holdings matter more than FOMC press conferences. All three are published by the U.S. Treasury and none of them are improving. Our interactive chart of gold against the national debt shows the relationship since 1970, and a Gold IRA is the simplest way to hold the asset on the right side of it.
