The Fed Hiked. Gold Went Up Anyway.
By Advantage Gold | September 2026
The Federal Reserve raised rates 25 basis points on September 16, the first increase since July 2023, taking the Fed Funds Rate to 3.75-4.00%. Gold closed the week above $4,350 and trades at $4,353 this morning.
Higher rates raise the cost of holding gold and strengthen the dollar. Gold went up. The structural bid underneath this market is larger than any single rate decision.
The $40 trillion national debt did not change. The US still pays $1.25 trillion in interest every year, consuming 18.5% of all federal revenue, a new all-time record. China has bought gold for 22 consecutive months. The dollar holds its lowest reserve share this century.
Gold fell from $4,400 to a low near $4,029 in the weeks before the decision because August NFP printed 162,000 against a 56,000 forecast, pushing hike odds to 85.5%. Paper market traders sold. Gold corrected on the same mechanism in Q2 2023, and from those lows it went on to reach a January 2026 all-time high of $5,597. Rate suppression is temporary. Fiscal deterioration compounds.
Borrowing costs now sit at their highest in three years on a government spending $1.25 trillion annually just to service existing debt. JPMorgan targets $6,000 by year-end. Goldman Sachs holds at $4,900. Wells Fargo projects $6,100 to $6,300. Not one major institution revised its target after the correction.
Gold is at $4,353. The thesis is unchanged.

Why gold rises even when the Fed hikes
When the Fed hiked and gold climbed, it confirmed something investors have watched build for three years: gold now trades on debt and currency credibility rather than on the Fed, not on the next quarter-point. The FOMC calendar will keep producing headlines, but the national debt is the variable that does not reverse. If you have been waiting for a rate cycle to turn before adding gold, this is the data point that says the wait is not necessary. A Gold IRA lets you hold the metal with the same tax treatment as your current account.
