The Math Behind Gold. No Predictions Required.

By Advantage Gold | September 2026

The US national debt is $40 trillion. Annual interest payments exceed $1.25 trillion, consuming 18.5% of all federal revenue, a new all-time record. The previous record was 18.4%, set in 1991 when the 30-year Treasury yield was approximately 8%. Today that yield sits near 5%, which shows how much larger the debt has grown in absolute terms since then.

The dollar’s purchasing power has fallen 49% since January 2000, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index.

Gold went from $279 per ounce in 2000 to approximately $4,353 today, a gain of approximately 1,460%. Its annual supply grows at approximately 1-2%, limited by how much can be extracted from the ground each year. The dollar supply grew far faster across the same period, driven by deficit spending and debt accumulation across multiple administrations. When a currency’s supply grows faster than the economy it represents, each unit buys less. Gold’s supply cannot be expanded by any government decision.

The Congressional Budget Office projects structural deficits of 5-6.5% of GDP for the next decade. Recently passed legislation adds an estimated $3.3 trillion to the national debt over 10 years. As existing low-rate bonds mature and roll over at current rates, the interest burden will grow further. No credible fiscal path to reversal exists under current policy.

Gold carries no interest payments and no counterparty risk. No government manages its supply. Over 26 years of the fiscal conditions described above, it outperformed every major asset class.

The math behind gold, applied to your own savings

The math behind gold is arithmetic, not opinion: when the national debt grows faster than the economy and the interest bill grows faster than tax revenue, the gap is closed with newly created dollars. That is the whole math behind gold, and it requires no forecast. Every dollar you hold is diluted by that process; an ounce of gold is not. That is the math behind gold in one sentence. You can run the same math on your own retirement account with the tools in our resources hub, then decide how much of it belongs in an asset that cannot be printed. The math behind gold does not change when the headlines do.

Here is the same math behind gold at household scale. Suppose your retirement account holds $500,000 in stocks and bonds. If the dollar loses 3% of its purchasing power a year, which is roughly what the past five years have delivered, that balance has to grow by $15,000 annually just to stand still in real terms. Gold does not promise a return, but it is priced in the currency that is being diluted, which is why it has kept pace with the money supply over every long period since 1971.

Allocating 10% of that account to physical metal does not change your tax situation if it is done through a self-directed IRA, and it means a tenth of your savings is no longer dependent on the arithmetic working out in Washington’s favor. If you would like to see the numbers for your own account, a specialist can walk through them with you at (888) 501-9001, with no obligation.
