What Is a Gold IRA and How Does It Work?

By Advantage Gold | September 2026

A Gold IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds physical gold and other precious metals instead of, or in addition to, traditional paper assets like stocks and bonds. The account functions under the same tax rules as a conventional IRA, but the underlying asset is physical metal — bars and coins that meet IRS purity standards — rather than shares in a company or units in a fund.

Here is how it works, step by step.

THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK

The Internal Revenue Service allows self-directed IRAs to hold certain alternative assets, including physical precious metals, real estate, and private equity. The authority comes from IRC Section 408(m), which specifies that an IRA may hold gold, silver, platinum, and palladium coins and bars meeting specific fineness requirements.

For gold, the IRS requires a minimum fineness of 0.995 (99.5% pure). Eligible gold products include American Gold Eagle coins, American Gold Buffalo coins, Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins, Austrian Gold Philharmonic coins, and gold bars from approved refiners meeting the purity standard. The Gold American Eagle is a specific exception — it meets the IRS standard despite a fineness of 0.9167 because it is produced by the US Mint.

The one important restriction: the physical metal cannot be stored in your home or a personal safe. IRS regulations require that IRA-held precious metals be stored in an approved depository, and that a qualified custodian administer the account.

THE CUSTODIAN AND THE DEPOSITORY

Two separate entities are required for a Gold IRA.

The custodian is an IRS-approved financial institution — typically a specialized trust company — that administers the account, maintains the official records, files the required IRS reporting, and processes transactions. The custodian does not hold the physical metal.

The depository is a separate, IRS-approved storage facility that physically holds the metal. Major depositories include Brink’s, Delaware Depository, International Depository Services, and CNT Depository. Most depositories offer two storage options: segregated storage, where your metal is stored separately from other clients’ holdings, and commingled storage, where metal is stored collectively with other clients’ metal of the same type and purity. Segregated storage typically carries a higher fee but provides direct identification of your specific coins or bars.

Advantage Gold works with custodians and depositories that have been vetted for security, insurance coverage, regulatory compliance, and fee transparency.

HOW TO OPEN A GOLD IRA

The process involves four steps.

First, open a self-directed IRA with an approved custodian. The account is titled identically to a conventional IRA — traditional, Roth, SEP, or SIMPLE — with the same contribution limits and tax treatment applicable to that account type.

Second, fund the account. There are three ways to do this. A direct contribution follows the same annual contribution limits as a conventional IRA ($7,000 for individuals under 50, $8,000 for those 50 and older in 2026, subject to income limits for Roth). A rollover moves funds from an existing IRA of the same type into the new self-directed IRA — this can be done directly between custodians without tax consequence.

A transfer moves funds from a qualified employer plan, such as a 401(k), 403(b), or 457 plan, into the self-directed IRA — this is the most common funding method for Gold IRAs, and when done properly (directly between institutions, as a trustee-to-trustee transfer), it generates no taxable event and no early distribution penalty.

Third, select the metals. Working with a precious metals dealer, you choose which eligible gold, silver, platinum, or palladium products to purchase. The custodian issues the purchase order, the dealer ships the metal directly to the approved depository, and the depository stores it in your account’s name.

Fourth, the depository holds the metal in allocated storage, the custodian maintains the account records, and annual statements reflect the market value of your holdings.

TAX TREATMENT

A Traditional Gold IRA follows the same tax rules as a conventional traditional IRA. Contributions may be tax-deductible depending on income and whether you or your spouse participate in an employer plan. Growth within the account is tax-deferred. Distributions are taxed as ordinary income, and required minimum distributions (RMDs) begin at age 73.

A Roth Gold IRA follows the same rules as a conventional Roth IRA. Contributions are made with after-tax dollars and are not deductible. Growth within the account is tax-free. Qualified distributions in retirement are tax-free. Roth IRAs have no RMDs during the account holder’s lifetime.

A SEP Gold IRA follows SEP IRA rules, with higher contribution limits appropriate for self-employed individuals and small business owners.

COSTS

Gold IRA costs typically include a one-time account setup fee, annual custodian administration fees, annual depository storage fees, and the dealer spread on precious metals purchases (the difference between the spot price and the purchase price). Fees vary by custodian and depository. It is important to understand all costs before opening an account, as fees affect the net return on your investment.

Advantage Gold is transparent about all fees and works to ensure clients understand exactly what they will pay before any transaction is completed.

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER A GOLD IRA

A Gold IRA may be worth considering for investors who want to diversify a portion of their retirement savings into physical precious metals within a tax-advantaged structure, who believe the fiscal and monetary environment favors gold and silver over the long term, who want direct ownership of physical metal rather than exposure through an ETF or mining stock, or who want to reduce their retirement portfolio’s concentration in dollar-denominated paper assets.

It is not appropriate for every investor. The right decision depends on your individual financial situation, time horizon, risk tolerance, tax circumstances, and existing retirement assets. A qualified financial advisor can help evaluate whether a Gold IRA fits your specific situation.
