89% of Central Banks Expect Global Gold Reserves to Rise. 74% Expect the Dollar’s Share to Fall. Here Is the Full Picture.
By Advantage Gold | October 2026
The World Gold Council’s 2026 Central Bank Gold Reserves Survey asked reserve managers two distinct sets of questions. The answers tell two different but deeply related stories about where the global monetary system is heading.
89% of respondents expect global central bank gold reserves to increase over the next 12 months. This is a near-unanimous consensus view — not about what individual banks are planning to do, but about where the broader market is going. Among 76 central banks surveyed, representing institutions across six continents and dozens of political systems, 68 of them expect the global gold reserve trend to continue upward.
74% expect the dollar’s share of global reserves to be moderately or significantly lower in five years. This is a structural forecast about the dollar’s trajectory — made by the people whose professional mandate is to manage exposure to it.
84% believe gold will hold a higher share of total reserves five years from now, up from 76% last year.
These three data points describe the same structural shift from three angles. The dollar is losing its position as the dominant reserve asset. Gold is filling the gap. The institutions closest to the process expect it to continue.
THE DOLLAR’S RESERVE SHARE IN CONTEXT
The dollar’s share of global foreign currency reserves has fallen from approximately 71% in 2000 to approximately 54% today — its lowest level this century. That 17-percentage-point decline represents trillions of dollars of reserve assets diversified away from dollar-denominated obligations over 25 years.
The decline has accelerated since 2022. The freezing of Russia’s foreign exchange reserves demonstrated, in the most direct possible way, that dollar-denominated assets held in foreign custody are subject to political risk that physical gold stored domestically is not. Central banks responded rationally. Gold purchases accelerated. Repatriation programs intensified. The dollar’s reserve share fell further.
If 74% of the survey’s respondents — the institutions that collectively manage the world’s sovereign reserves — expect the dollar’s share to continue falling, the next 25 years may look structurally similar to the last 25. The reserve share that stood at 71% in 2000 and sits at 54% today could reach the low 40s by 2050 if the pace continues.
Gold, which for the first time since 1971 holds a larger share of global central bank reserves than US Treasuries, would be the primary beneficiary of continued dollar diversification.
WHAT 89% CONSENSUS LOOKS LIKE IN PRACTICE
A consensus view held by 89% of survey respondents is not a marginal opinion. In a group of 76 central banks representing institutions from developed and developing economies, aligned and non-aligned nations, creditor and debtor countries — 68 of them independently conclude that global gold reserves will increase over the next 12 months.
The buying that would produce that outcome is already underway. China has purchased gold for 22 consecutive months. South Korea resumed physical gold buying for the first time in 13 years. Poland is targeting 700 tonnes. India repatriated 77% of its gold to domestic storage. 45% of central banks plan to increase their own reserves — a new record.
The 89% consensus is not a forecast. It is a description of what is already happening.
