Record 45% of Central Banks Plan to Increase Their Own Gold Reserves. Here Is What the Full Survey Says.

By Advantage Gold | October 2026

The World Gold Council’s 2026 Central Bank Gold Reserves Survey drew responses from 76 central banks — the highest participation rate since the survey began nine years ago. The findings describe a structural shift in how sovereign institutions are thinking about reserve assets.

45% of respondents plan to increase their own institution’s gold reserves in the next 12 months. That is a new record, up from 43% in 2025 and significantly above the historical average. 89% expect global central bank gold reserves to increase over the same period. 74% expect the dollar’s share of global reserves to be moderately or significantly lower in five years. 84% believe gold will hold a higher share of total reserves five years from now, up from 76% last year.

These four figures measure different things. The 45% represents individual institutional commitment — what specific central banks are actually planning to do with their own reserves. The 89% represents a near-unanimous consensus view about the direction of the broader market. The 74% and 84% figures represent five-year structural assessments about the dollar and gold made by the people whose job it is to manage exposure to both.

Read together, they describe a system in transition.

WHY CENTRAL BANKS ARE BUYING

Among the 34 central banks that indicated plans to increase gold reserves, 31 cited portfolio diversification as the primary motivation. The second most cited reason was gold’s performance as a safe haven during crisis periods.

Neither motivation is new. What is new is the urgency and scale. The weaponization of dollar reserves in February 2022 — when the US and allies froze approximately $300 billion of Russia’s foreign exchange holdings — accelerated a diversification trend that was already underway. Central banks that had been gradually reducing dollar concentration began doing so more aggressively. Central banks that had been passive observers of the trend began actively participating.

The dollar’s reserve share has fallen from approximately 71% in 2000 to approximately 54% today — its lowest level this century. If 74% of the survey’s respondents expect that decline to continue over the next five years, the trajectory of the next decade may look similar to the last two.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE GOLD MARKET

Central bank buying has been a consistent structural demand floor beneath gold prices for more than a decade. The World Gold Council estimates central banks purchased approximately 1,000 tonnes of gold annually for four consecutive years before 2026. JPMorgan projects approximately 755 tonnes of central bank purchases in 2026 alone.

When nearly half of the world’s central banks are simultaneously planning to add to their gold positions — and when the survey’s respondents represent institutions managing trillions in sovereign wealth — the demand floor this creates is not a tactical trade. It is a structural feature of the gold market that does not reverse with a single Fed meeting or a single yield spike.

Gold at $4,153 today sits 26% below its January 2026 all-time high of $5,608. The central banks planning to increase their reserves are not selling into this correction. The survey was conducted between February and May 2026 — after the correction had begun. The plans to add were made at these price levels.
